COMMENDS KANO GOVERNOR, ASSEMBLY
FOR
SUSPENDING PROBE OF EMIR
The
Kano State House of Assembly yesterday suspended its probe of the Emir of Kano,
Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II. The House resolved to drop the probe after the
state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, pleaded for truce through a letter read by
the speaker, Kabiru Alhassan Rirum, on the floor of the House.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) commends Governor
Ganduje for demonstrating statesmanship. We also give kudos to the Speaker and
the honourable members of the state’s House of Assembly for manifesting
political maturity and high level of discipline.
Kano city is the
economic hub of the North whose growth should be promoted at all times. We
therefore appeal to the State Governor, the lawmakers, the Emir and Islamic
scholars in the state to always find in-house solutions to issues in the
interest of peace, law and order.
MURIC expresses
delight in the peaceful resolution of the crisis. We acknowledge the
outstanding contributions of the Emir to the introduction of the Islamic
banking system in Nigeria, his immense exposure to the Shari’ah legal system
and his passion for the advancement of Islam. Nonetheless, we call on Emir
Sanusi to always carry along Kano State authorities and Islamic scholars in the
state and other parts of Northern Nigeria in his deliberations.
We thank all those who
intervened in the imbroglio especially His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto and
President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji
Sa’ad Abubakar III.
In conclusion, we appeal for cohesion among Northern
leaders and charge them to utilize the various mechanisms available in the
region to resolve issues without externalizing them because every little
incident in the North has far-reaching impact on Islamdom in Nigeria.

Should we not cover out heads in shame that we are in support of the shelving of the process of confirming an allegation of mismanagement of funds in the Kano palace? What is the concept of justice and accountability in Islam? Because the Emir supported the establishment of Islamic banking, has knowledge of Islamic law, does it mean that we should not probe or question him in the name of accountability if there is an allegation? There is an allegation of the exorbitant spending and squandering of the Kano emirate's fund....for example, 30 million Naira for three years for internet and phone calls by the Emir in a country where there is extreme poverty living in the masses....and by a former central bank governor who questioned the excessive spending and monies allocated to top government officials. This is not the objective of the shari'ah. The maqasid of the Shari'ah teaches us about justice. We must hold accountability and transparency close to our hearts. That is what Islam preaches. And that is what MURIC should stand up for. Not celebrate the suspension of probe for allegation of money mismanagement.
